Common Uses For Beryllium Copper

by | Jul 21, 2021 | Beryllium Copper, Blog | 0 comments

Beryllium Copper is a versatile copper alloy with great strength and hardness, as well as excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. It’s a metal alloy that’s non-ferrous, non-magnetic, and non-sparking. Beryllium Copper is also known as Beryllium Bronze and Spring Bronze. Beryllium copper is a modern metal alloy compared to metals that were discovered hundreds of years ago such as brass and bronze. Beryllium metal was first isolated in 1828 by reacting beryllium chloride with potassium. In the same nation, the first beryllium copper metal components in the shape of conductive springs were produced in 1920 and utilized in telephone switchboard relays. The usage of beryllium copper in the automotive and telecommunications industries became common around 1970. Beryllium copper is now widely utilized in a variety of sectors, including energy (tools for oil and gas extraction, coal mining), electricity, electronics (connectors), cryogenics, automotive (valve seats and guides, anti-lock braking), and many more. Beryllium copper is an excellent material for musical instruments such as triangles, trumpets, bells, and tambourines because it produces constant tones and has a high resonant frequency. It has the ability to withstand marine environments because of its biofouling properties tagged along with high strength. It is commonly used on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment wherein the use of magnetic ferrous metals can be detrimental.

Common uses for Beryllium Copper

  • Beryllium Copper Products Are Used As Conductive Elastic Elements And Elastic Sensitive Elements More than 60% of all beryllium copper production is used as an elastic material. In the electronics and instrument sectors, it is commonly utilized as elastic components such as switches, reeds, contacts, bellows, and diaphragms.
  • Beryllium Copper Alloys Are Used As Sliding Bearings And Wear-Resistant Components. The beryllium copper alloy is used to produce bearings in computers and many civil aircraft because of its high wear resistance. American Airlines, for example, replaced copper bearings with beryllium copper bearings, extending the service life from 8000 to 28000 hours. Furthermore, the wires used in electric locomotives and trams are constructed of beryllium copper, which is corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant, and high-strength, as well as having superior conductivity.
  • Beryllium Copper Alloys Are Used As Explosion-Proof Tool. Because beryllium copper does not create sparks when struck, it may be used in different operational tools in the petroleum, chemical, and other industries. In addition, beryllium copper working tools have been utilized in a variety of explosion-proof jobs.
  • Application Of Beryllium Copper Alloy in-mould. Because of its great hardness, strength, thermal conductivity, and castability, the beryllium copper alloy can directly cast moulds with exceptionally high accuracy and complicated shapes. Furthermore, beryllium copper alloy mould has a very solid finish, it has clear patterns, a very short production style, and a part of their material – the old mould material can be reused, hence this product could be eco-friendly and help in saving cost. Beryllium copper alloy has been used in various instances such as e plastic mould, pressure casting mould, precision casting mould, and many more.
  • Applications In High-Conductivity Beryllium Copper Alloy, Cu-Ni-Be and Co-Cu-Be alloys, for example, exhibit excellent strength and electrical conductivity, with conductivity up to 50% IACS. Contact electrodes for electric welding machines and elastic components with high conductivity in electronic goods are made of highly conductive beryllium copper alloy. This alloy’s application spectrum is steadily growing.

More about Beryllium copper

There are two types of beryllium copper alloys available. According to the alloy composition, beryllium copper alloys with a beryllium concentration of 0.2 per cent to 0.6 per cent have excellent conductivity, while beryllium copper alloys with a beryllium level of 1.6 per cent to 2.0 per cent have high strength.

Conclusion

  • Beryllium copper is a highly prized metal alloy that combines great strength and hardness with excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. It is non-magnetic, non-ferrous, and non-sparking. It’s utilized in a variety of sectors, including energy, automotive, electronics, and more.
  • Brass and bronze are included in the pool of various other copper base alloys. Brass is popularly known for its strength and durability, it is an alloy of copper and zinc. Bronze on the other hand is a brittle and hard metal and is produced by combining copper and various other alloying metals including tin (the main additive), phosphorus, and manganese.
  • When working with beryllium copper, there are health risks. Inhalation (the most dangerous method), ingestion, and skin and ocular penetration are all possible ways for it to enter the human body. When dealing with beryllium coppe, safety precautions must be followed on the shop floor.
