What is Stainless Steel 904L Plate ?

Stainless Steel 904L is a high-performance alloy that combines molybdenum and copper with iron, significantly enhancing its resistance to reducing acids like sulfuric acid. It excels in environments with chlorides, offering low pitting and crevice corrosion, as well as resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The “L” in 904L signifies its low carbon content, specifically 0.03% or less, which contributes to its excellent welding properties.

904L is an austenitic alloy, meaning it is a non-magnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron, enhancing its corrosion resistance. Unlike some other stainless steels, 904L cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Although it can be welded using standard methods, it is prone to hot cracking. While machinable, it does not machine particularly well.
